Another benefit of the interface is the metal-to-metal connection between screw and abutment. Conventionally, specialists have been careful about using ceramic abutments, since their compressive strength is less than that of titanium or other noble metals. Metal abutments are especially preferred when treating the molar areas, since the masticatory forces in these can damage a ceramic abutment by creating a great deal of torque pressure.
But unlike many all-ceramic abutments on the market today, our 3M Custom zirconia abutments are built differently. To create the implant abutment, Lava Zirconia is cemented to a prefabricated titanium abutment interface. The abutment head is bonded to the interface without creating torque pressure to the zirconia. This method provides compatibility with a wide variety of implant systems. The screw on the abutment does not torque directly into the zirconia material, so you can follow standard recommendations for torque pressures on the screw and abutment.
